Sheila splits the role of the Surgical Liason Nurse with another nurse. They work on alternating days to cover the family waiting room. After a patient goes into the operating room, the families will check-in at the Liason office. It is the responsibility of the Liason nurse to call into all 24 operating rooms, 2 procedure rooms, and interventional radiology procedure rooms every 90 minutes and update the caregivers on the status of their children and loved ones. As you can imagine, the waiting room area is an emotionally charged space, and an immense amount of calming energy, empathy, patience, and multi-tasking skills are required to make it run smoothly. With the help of two nursing assistants, Sheila and her partner excel in this role. They are the only connection a parent has to their child while in surgery and parents often mention how vital this is to them! She exemplifies and promotes family-centered care at its core and would be well-deserved to win a DAISY Award!
