Sheila is an extraordinary nurse with 15 years of experience in the endoscopy unit. Sheila is the type of nurse that everyone looks up to. She is a mentor and a preceptor for the unit and takes great pride in her skills. She continuously delivers exceptional care to every patient that she comes in contact with. She provides her patients with dignity and compassion on a daily basis. In fact, she treats her patients as if they were a part of her immediate family.
Recently, we received a call from a sister unit requesting help with a feeding tube that they were not familiar with. Sheila did not think twice; she immediately volunteered to help. It did not matter that she was unfamiliar with the patient. Her only reaction was to help. When Sheila entered the room she treated the patient as if it were her own father. Although the patient was clearly confused, she took time to explain what she was doing and made sure his dignity remained intact while assessing him. She did this with a calming tone to her voice and a gentle touch. She did not rush and her only objective was to provide safe care to the patient while incorporating integrity, dignity, and compassion.
Sheila continually goes out of her way to provide excellent nursing care. Although most of the time the patients in endoscopy are asleep, Sheila takes extra time to ensure their dignity and respect are kept intact at all times. She is truly someone who cares and takes great pride in being part of the nursing profession.
