Sheila has entered numerous safety catches and near misses which has led to process improvements and ultimately allowed us to provide better patient care.
Sheila Swift is a nurse who works on the Medical Care Unit of OHTLMC. I have had the privilege to work with Sheila for the past eight years of her eleven years with OHTLMC. Sheila’s dedication to not only this facility but her advocacy for her patients never ceases to amaze me. Finding only one example of Sheila's devotion to the nursing profession would be difficult so I'm going to attempt to combine this nomination with a few.

What stands out initially is her attention to detail and nursing skills. Sheila often has reviewed her patient’s charts, determined gaps in the patient's care (late meds, missing meds, duplicate orders, need for additional labs, orders, consults, etc.) prior to other ancillary departments. In doing so, she is quick to notify those departments, provide the information needed and obtain a solution timely and effectively for her patients. A recent example is when Sheila noticed that a patient had a positive urine culture but no antibiotics ordered to treat the bacteria, with Sheila’s quick intervention, the patient had no deficits in their care. In short, there is no doubt that Sheila's patients are receiving the best possible care with her at the helm. Sheila has entered numerous safety catches and near misses which has led to process improvements and ultimately allowed us to provide better patient care.

Sheila is flexible to staff whenever is needed, missed by many when she is not on shift, and is always motivating others to do what’s best for the patient. Although Sheila works primarily dayshift, she has stepped up on numerous occasions to meet the needs of her department and patients by working second and third shift, most notably during the COVID pandemic.

I would describe Sheila as being the epitome of what a beside nurse should be, always providing leadership to new nurses (charge nurse and preceptor roles), having a positive “can-do” attitude, even in challenging situations (codes, rapid responses, nurse shortages) and truly walks the walk and talks the talk for the nursing profession. I am honored to have Sheila as a co-worker and truly believe she is an Extraordinary Nurse worthy of the DAISY Award.
