Shelby cared for a severely demented patient who arrived in our Emergency Department via EMS. There was suspicion that this patient was a victim of domestic violence. This patient was now displaced from her home and familiar surroundings in the middle of the night. I watched Shelby spend extra time talking to her and comforting her, demonstrating caring in a way I can only describe as the kind of compassionate care that I would want for my loved one. Even in our very busy environment, she worked to ensure that this patient received the 1:1 attention she needed. With no sitter available, she took the time to listen with a sympathetic ear and offered much-needed comfort and support to this patient.
