My father was treated in the Critical Care Unit after a major fall. The patient was a robust and active 82-year-old. Upon arrival, he was alert but required surgical measures to correct a fractured spine and aortic dissection which needed to wait due to previous medications (blood thinners). After surgical stabilization of the spine the patient was sedated and ventilated to allow recovery. During this period the patient had pneumonia which eventually led to multi-system organ failure. The whole staff was wonderful, and my family is grateful to each member for guiding us through this incomprehensible time.

As my father’s recovery outcome declined, the staff guided us in his care. However, Shelby was an absolute standout in the staff and embodied what true care should look like. She was unfailingly compassionate and invested in every stage as we progressed. She was the most informative and candid healthcare provider I have ever met. She not only guided us through an extremely difficult time, but she courageously took each step with us ensuring we were balancing his physical care along with our/his wishes for him through a realistic ethical lens. Her investment and compassion in both her patients and their families are unmatched and she is the nurse that we needed who carried us through one of the most difficult times in our lives.
