Shelby has actively sought out ways to break down barriers that impact education and assessments for patients that are not native English speakers.
Shelby goes above and beyond for her patients to ensure that being not proficient in the English language doesn't limit critical education regarding care and prevention during their hospital stay. The patient is a native Russian speaker as well as his wife. He presented to DRAH with a new onset stroke and had recently been hospitalized at another institution for another stroke. Best practice and evidence support that stroke education should be ongoing during a hospitalization and presented as handouts for discharge. DRAH doesn't have stroke education in Russian readily available. Shelby reviewed stroke education and prevention using the interpreter but knew that providing a handout education in Russian was best practice for patient learning. She actively sought out stroke education handouts in Russian to provide to the patient and his family. I know the patient and his wife were extremely appreciative of Shelby for providing them with the important information in their native language. Shelby has actively sought out ways to break down barriers that impact education and assessments for patients that are not native English speakers. She has continuously demonstrated her commitment to reducing barriers and delivering safe and quality care. A big thank you to Shelby for being a shining example of a GREAT and compassionate nurse.
