May 2026 Honoree
Shelby Donner, RN
Shelby Donner was my PACU nurse, and she demonstrated truly exceptional, compassionate care during my recovery. When I first woke up, I was disoriented and anxious, and I told her that my heart was racing. Shelby remained calm and reassuring, guided me through breathing and relaxation techniques to try to lower my heart rate naturally, and when that wasn’t effective, she promptly administered medication while continuing to explain everything to me in a comforting way. Her calm presence immediately helped me feel safer.
Following surgery, I needed antibiotics, and Shelby gave me the choice between receiving them through an IV or taking a pill. I shared that I was concerned about nausea and possibly vomiting, and without hesitation, she accommodated my concerns and administered the medication through the IV instead. Throughout this process, she was incredibly attentive, checking on me frequently and making sure I was comfortable.
My surgery had been delayed by almost two hours, yet Shelby never made me feel rushed. She went out of her way to let me know she was happy to stay late to ensure I had everything I needed before going home. That level of dedication and kindness meant so much during a vulnerable moment.
Shelby was hands down one of the most attentive and compassionate PACU nurses I have ever had. She made me feel safe, welcome, and relaxed during an experience that could have been very stressful.
Thank you so much for everything you did, Shelby.
