When you are 91, have macular degeneration, mobility, and hearing struggles, a hospital stay after a fall at home can be a frightening and overwhelming ordeal. All of the CHI Oakes Hospital staff were excellent, but one “angel on earth” stood out in the eyes of my family, and most especially, in the eyes of my mom.

Shelby was not only a good nurse, efficient, knowledgeable, and professional, but she went above and beyond to meet Mom’s individual, specific needs. Shelby spoke cheerfully and encouragingly to Mom, slowly and distinctively, so she could understand. She was patient beyond measure. She took the extra time to become Mom’s friend. There was even some banter about adopting her into the family! For example, when Shelby tucked Mom in at night, she picked up on the way Mom likes the blanket just so over her ear like a “cap”. Soon the word spread and all the staff were doing the same. Nurses like Shelby are rare gems. Their love, compassion, and above-and-beyond care make the world a brighter, more beautiful place.
