While preparing to begin dialysis for a patient, Shelby immediately noticed something was wrong. The patient was unusually unresponsive—far beyond what she would expect following sedation from a recent procedure. Trusting her clinical judgment and experience, Shelby urgently called the patient’s name multiple times. When he did not respond, she wasted no time alerting the nursing team on 6 West.

Within moments, a Code Blue was called, and a multidisciplinary team rushed in to provide lifesaving care. Because of Shelby’s vigilance and decisive action, the team was able to intervene quickly during a critical and life-threatening situation.

The patient’s family later shared their profound gratitude, recognizing that Shelby’s instincts and rapid response made all the difference. Her ability to recognize subtle but significant changes in her patient’s condition reflects the highest level of nursing expertise and compassion.

Shelby’s actions serve as a powerful reminder of the vital role nurses play—not only in delivering treatment, but in advocating for their patients and responding when every second counts.

Congratulations, Shelby, and thank you for embodying the compassion, skill, and excellence that define the DAISY Award and Torrance Memorial.

Thank you, Shelby, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
