She waited until she saw a staff member she knew well enough to ask to help her, and they took him into the restroom, cleaned him, removed his soiled clothes, and dressed him.
One day, our lovely Shelly Addison walked through our lobby and saw a gentleman in a wheelchair who was a paraplegic looking very distressed. She asked him if she could help him, and he told her he had wet himself. Shelly immediately went into action to help. When she wasn't able to reach the on-duty male House Supervisor, she went to retrieve scrubs and came back to get the gentleman. She waited until she saw a staff member she knew well enough to ask to help her, and they took him into the restroom, cleaned him, removed his soiled clothes, and dressed him.
Shelly asked the man how he was getting home, and he told her he was taking the bus. She took the time to take him to the bus stop. She returned to my office sweating due to the extreme heat and expressed her concern over him waiting outside and getting overheated. She got on her phone and looked at the bus schedule, and determined he would be there long enough that he needed water. I asked her if she needed water, and she told me she wasn't worried about herself, she was worried about him. She left to take the gentleman some water and check on his well-being.
I want to acknowledge Shelly's extraordinary act of kindness by nominating her for the DAISY Award. It is such an honor to work with this exceptional nurse and wonderful human being!
