Hearing that Sherly was his nurse was better than any medicine. A response like this from a patient is the highest compliment a nurse can achieve.
Sherly Mathew demonstrates excellent teamwork, outstanding resource, and support to her coworkers and her patients. I will share my observations and tell her patient’s story.

Within the last month, Sherly managed a groin complication from a right femoral artery stick on a post cath/PCI patient performed almost a week earlier. Suddenly in the middle of the night, she responded to her patient’s call to find a huge hematoma to the right groin. Early that morning around 7 am, the interventional cardiology fellows examined the patient and commended Sherly on her skillful and appropriate interventions resulting in less pain, reduced hematoma, softer tissue at the insertion site, and femstop properly placed.

Later, the patient was taken to the cath lab for a scheduled complex PCI requiring arterial sticks to bilateral femoral artery. Upon arrival back to his room, left femoral artery sheath was removed. Approximately, half an hour after sheath removed, hematoma to the left groin developed. There were two interventional cardiology fellows and at least four nurses at the bedside. Manual compression, fem stop applied, patient anxious, stressed, and in pain. With his tense muscles, I can almost foresee a vagal response. As one of the nurses ran to get pain meds, I was challenged to get our patient to relax. It was change of shift. The night staff had just arrived. I said to the patient, “your Nurse Sherly is back tonight and she will take good care of you”. He responded, “is she the nurse from last night?” I said, “Yes Sir, she was your nurse last night”. No exaggeration, I saw his muscles relax, less stress, and at ease. He was comforted and reassured that he would be OK. Hearing that Sherly was his nurse was better than any medicine. A response like this from a patient is the highest compliment a nurse can achieve.

I brought Sherly and the Charge Nurse to his room and said, “Sir, here is your nurse”. We all assessed his groin and then I stepped out with the night charge Nurse. The Charge Nurse said to me, don’t worry, “Sherly won’t leave him”. Again, what a commendation from your charge nurse.

A couple of days ago, there was a code blue at change of shift. Day to Night shift handoff had not started. It was not Sherly’s patient, however, Sherly was at the bedside actively engaged in our resuscitative efforts. With her excellent time management, as the opportunity presented itself, Sherly left code blue since there were adequate staff in the code blue, took initiative, and obtained handoff on her patients. Sherly was one of the only two experienced nurses on her shift, the charge nurse and herself. Sherly returned and with no hesitation and very willingly, assisted the respiratory therapist, physician, and myself and transported the patient to an ICU bed. She exhibited excellent teamwork and stepped up with her experience and skills. She exemplified commitment and support in serving her patients. She exhibited excellent knowledge, skills, and teamwork, and went above and beyond. Sherly is a true DAISY Nurse.
