I am honored to nominate Sherri Russell for The DAISY Award. My husband was diagnosed with Amyloidosis. After a year of chemotherapy, he was scheduled for a stem cell transplant. While the AL diagnosis itself was difficult, learning what the transplant process would involve was overwhelming; we were truly frightened. Facing high-dose chemotherapy followed by a two-week hospital stay was a lot to absorb.

My husband was admitted to the Transplant Unit, where we met our intake nurse, Sherri Russell. From the very beginning, it felt as though she was placed in our lives for a reason. Sherri was our first introduction to the unit, and she immediately gave us a sense of hope. She brought everything we needed: experience, compassion, and a genuine willingness to explain every detail. She reassured us that she would be there every step of the way, and we took great comfort in that.

Sherri spent time sitting with us, holding our hands, and offering hugs when we needed them most. Due to restrictions, we were essentially alone without family or a support system. Sherri became that support for us. Her knowledge and skill were evident not only to us, but to the entire staff, who frequently sought her guidance. It was clear we were in very capable hands.

The entire team on 5 Center was exceptional, and we are deeply grateful for their care and generosity. Even when Sherri was not assigned to us as our nurse, she made a point of visiting us every day. She sat with us, comforted us, and even shared in our tears. That level of compassion is rare. We found not only an extraordinary nurse, but a lifelong friend.

During our lowest moments, her warmth and kindness brought us light. We looked forward to her visits each evening before she went home. Even on her days off, she checked in on us, which showed just how deeply she cared. Our journey didn't end there. Months later, my husband was admitted to the ICU with bacterial pneumonia. Sherri once again went above and beyond, coming to our floor after her shift just to sit with me. That kind of dedication speaks volumes about who she is, both as a nurse and as a person.

As we near the end of his treatment, there is not a day that goes by that we don’t reflect on our hospital experience and the role Sherri played in helping us through it. We truly do not believe we could have made it through without her.

Sherri Russell is an incredible asset to Corewell Health Butterworth. It would mean so much to us to see her recognized with The DAISY Award for the extraordinary compassion, dedication, and care she provides to her patients and their families.

Thank you, Sherri M, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
