Sherrie called for the hospital for follow-up and based on her assessment she urged the patient to return for an office visit.
I wanted to share with you the excellent triage work by Sherrie. The APN saw a patient who had been in and out of the emergency room for fever and myalgia. Was told twice it was a viral syndrome, was sent home, and told to rest and take acetaminophen and push fluids. Sherrie called for the hospital for follow-up and based on her assessment she urged the patient to return for an office visit. When the patient came in, she was clearly septic and was sent by squad over to Fairview Hospital. She is currently in the ICU and being treated for sepsis. I believe that Sherrie's work in care coordination is what brought the patient back in a timely manner. I believe her excellent assessment skills and her and her therapeutic communication prevented the patient from suffering at home. This is a true example of why the registered nurse plays a vital role in primary care.
