It is always a humbling experience when, as someone that is accustomed to delivering healthcare, you instead become a patient. To have the ability to truly see how well we do from the viewpoint of a patient can be considered a privilege. The staff at RMC truly performed at a high level; however there was one that stood above all others and that was Sherrie. It was obvious from my bed that Sherrie was a team player as she moved from bed to bed doing anything that she could to assist the other staff on the unit. Sherrie was not assigned to care for me, and yet she came over and with great skill and proficiency started my IV. Her manner was personal and friendly, yet professional at the same time. We profess that our mission is to treat everyone like a member of our family, yet I find that we do not always live up to that mission. However, I believe that you would be hard put to find a staff member that does it better than Sherrie. She noticed my concern regarding a part of my care and immediately came over to find out what was bothering me. She handled my concern in a professional manner, became my advocate and withheld my sedation until she had resolved my issue. Knowing that Sherrie was taking care of me, I could relax and go into surgery knowing that she had my back. I believe that she did exactly what she would have done if instead of a stranger, it was her sister lying in the bed. In my option Sherrie is an outstanding example of all that the Daisy Award honors including compassion, willingness to assist co-workers, and outgoing positive personality as well as the ultimate professional. Please consider recognizing Sherrie as an Extraordinary nurse as honored by the Daisy Award.
