I was rounding on my unit and entered a patient's room to ask a few questions. When asked if there was anyone she would like to recognize her immediate response was Sherrill. With tears in her eyes she very emotionally said Sherrill saved her life. Apparently, the patient came to the ER very sick and depressed. Sherrill made all the difference in the patient's life and the patient wanted to thank her.
Note from the patient:
"I would like to say thank you for giving me a wonderful caring nurse in the ER. I was not feeling well so I was brought to the ER scared, but when Sherrill was to be my nurse she was a great nurse. I didn't even have to ask to find her. She was always there when I needed her and made me feel like I was family. Sherrill took care of me. I wasn't a pain, I was in pain, but not a pain. Sherrill made me feel loved and was getting me well at the same time, no matter how many times I called her. So, I wanted to you to know that Sherrill saved me and I wanted to say thank you both Homestead Hospital and Sherrill for saving my life. Keep Sherrill forever. I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are my angel on earth and I love you for taking good care of me and being you. Sherrill made me feel well without me asking for help. Thank you."
In talking to this patient, she said that she came in very depressed and the way Sherrill talked to her and the compassion she demonstrated was amazing. The patient said previously she had felt that her life had no value, but after Sherrill talked to her she saw life in a different way and Sherrill saved her life.
I know it is difficult for patients to feel so cared and loved in such a fast paced environment, but the things we say and little acts we do go a long way and stay photographed in our patient's lives forever. Thank you for making such a caring and compassionate difference in this patients' life.
