While there are many, many reasons why Sheryl Greco is a DAISY Nurse, the one that stands out to me the most is her ability to mentor and support staff. Over the years, many staff have sought out Sheryl's advice at least once if not on an ongoing basis. They seek Sheryl out specifically because she listens and has an incredible presence that creates a safe and caring environment. She is able to give space for staff to express what's on their mind, whether that is a challenging interaction or a difficult clinical problem. She asks thoughtful questions and reflects back what she hears, all the time doing so in a kind and compassionate way. She gently guides the person to a path forward, asking questions like, "Have you thought about this," or "What do you think about trying this...," and by doing so, helps the staff member come to a solution that they feel ownership over. When she sees the person again, she always checks back to see how it went and does so with intention, caring, and patience. In all of this, Sheryl has grace, humor, and a humility that is simply unique to her and makes her such an incredible mentor and colleague.
There are times in life when we are fortunate to meet someone who embodies what it is to be a mentor and leader, one who exemplifies compassion in everything they do without even knowing the impact they have on others. Sheryl Greco is that person. Her knowledge is vast, and she is indeed an expert in her field, but that isn't what makes Sheryl stand out. Sheryl has a way of making everyone feel like they are the most important person in the room, that every question is significant and worth investigation. Her art of inquiry and mutual respect create a safe space for others to ask questions that encourage growth and ultimately lead to better outcomes. Over her many years at UWMC, Sheryl has mentored countless nurses and nurse leaders' professional growth. Her dedication to our teams is not only honorable but vital to their success. Sheryl is truly a DAISY!
