Shirley Joyner, RN, MS Ed. was honored with the DAISY Faculty Award after being nominated by a former student 42 years after that student graduated from nursing school. Shirley herself earned her Nursing Diploma from Shadyside School of Nursing. She then went on to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from LaRoche College, her Bachelor of Science in Education from California University of Pennsylvania and her Master of Science in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. Shirley enjoyed working as a nurse educator at Shadyside School of Nursing for 24 years. She taught fundamentals of nursing, medical surgical nursing, nursing leadership and operating room nursing. In addition to serving as a faculty member at the school, she served as curriculum coordinator and assistant director for curriculum. Shirley’s nursing career also included 32 ½ years at Shadyside hospital where she served as the Head Nurse in the operating room. In addition to her accomplished career as a nurse, Shirley also served as the president of the Penn Hills School District Board of Education for two years. Shirley said that her favorite part of working with nursing students was helping them to gain confidence in themselves. She loved helping the students facilitate their learning to become caring and compassionate nurses. On receiving the DAISY Faculty Award, Shirley said that it was an honor to be nominated, as well as the recipient of the award. She will always cherish the moment.
