Shirley is an amazing nurse who shows patients and their families unbiased love and compassion. One of Shirley's patients was involuntarily admitted. He had treatable cancer and was receiving treatment, but felt like he didn't have anything to live for and attempted suicide. He had a terrible childhood which led him to make mistakes in his adulthood that he regretted. The relationship that Shirley built with him over that week he was on our unit was beautiful. She continued to encourage him to forgive himself and find God. He told the nurse leaders that she showed him compassion and love that he was never given before. Even when she was not his assigned nurse, he stated that she would often come and check on him. I overheard her stopping by his room saying, "I know you are going through a lot and I want to make sure you are okay." When he was discharged he stated that he no longer wanted to die and wanted to continue to fight his cancer and it was due to his conversations with Shirley. This is only one example of the many stories I could provide. She always provides love and emotional support to all of her patients.
