My brother was admitted to the ICU after a cardiac arrest at 30 years old. My brother sadly went into cardiac arrest while withdrawing from drugs, as he was a struggling addict. We are no strangers to judgment from healthcare workers because of it. However, Shylah was never once judgmental.

My brother has very long hair, and she loved his beautiful hair. She took her time and put my brother’s hair into two beautiful braids to keep his hair from getting tangled during all his testing. She wanted to respect him and take care of his hair as he would. This simple little act went beyond words.

The fact that she took just two minutes of her time to treat him like an actual human left me speechless. She never viewed my brother as an addict she cared for; she didn’t even treat him like a patient, in the best way possible. She treated him like family, like a friend, like someone who deserves to have their hair done.

This woman deserves to wear a DAISY with pride; she deserves a raise, praise, and everything in between. She is a nurse I would like to be in charge of taking care of any family member I have in the hospital. She will forever be remembered in my family and talked about for years to come. Please show this nurse all the love!
