My father was the longest-running patient in the Surgical/Transplant Intensive Care Unit at Mount Sinai. While a long stent in the hospital seems horrific, when you have a team of nurses that go above and beyond in every aspect, it gave us a reason to smile walking into the hospital every day. Nurses have saved my father's life in more ways than ever. They cared for him physically and emotionally. They would stay late after their shift to watch a football game with him, they came in on their days off to wish him a happy birthday, and they took him on strolls around the hospital to get him out of his room. They even took turns on their break to bring him across the street to Central Park. He sadly passed away. We are devastated and heartbroken, and his nurses shifted their role from taking care of my dad to taking care of my mother and me. They got out of bed to come to the hospital the night he passed, they called us for days, and they showed up at his wake and funeral. I'm devastated my father is gone, but I now have a second family in the nurses at Mount Sinai. They are angels on earth; they are true heroes. In two years since my father's admission, they have all taken care of him, both in life and death.
