Sierra joined us in prayer and gave needed hugs. Sierra was more than a nurse; Sierra became family!
When I arrived from Texas to see my brother, I never expected to be signing a form to remove a life-sustaining device just days later.  I could not have made it through those days emotionally without the compassionate care of my brother and the entire family of our nurse.  We only had Sierra the last two days of his life, but I can tell you those two days made all the difference. All the nurses prior to Sierra were wonderful, but Sierra is steps above the rest.  I watched as she so carefully and respectfully took care of all my brother’s needs, coming into the room very often (not just sitting at the station outside the room).

Sierra helped us understand multiple diagnostic test results, delicately delivering sometimes bad news. When it was apparent that he was not going to recover, Sierra respectfully explained and answered all our questions about how he would pass into heaven.

On the last day, I arrived very early to spend some time alone with him before the rest of the family arrived. Sierra had combed his hair and beard; he was washed and looked so nice.  Sierra had The Beatles playing softly in the room. Sierra knew it was his favorite. When she found I liked iced tea, Sierra had a pitcher waiting for me. Sierra had trays of fruit and graham crackers for the family. Sierra allowed all the grandchildren in to say goodbye to their papa.

Sierra joined us in prayer and gave needed hugs. Sierra was more than a nurse; Sierra became family!

She let us know that the last day was ours.  Sierra addressed realities and formalities, yet Sierra allowed us to oversee the timetable.

If ever there is a day where it is tragically sad, yet so sweet, calm, and peaceful, that was the day.  Sierra made sure he was comfortable and pain-free.  Sierra is an Extraordinary Nurse and so deserving of this Award.
