Silver is an exemplary staff nurse, and sometimes Relief Charge Nurse, on 4N. However, on one particular day she went above and beyond to accommodate one of our patients.
We had a very sick young woman come in for a Direct Admit. She is an employee of ours and ideally she should have been bedded on 4West. However, on this day, our 4West unit was full. So, as House Supervisor, I arranged for her to have a private room on 4N. There was a delay in getting the room ready because housekeeping had to do a deep clean of the room. This young woman was waiting for her bed in our main lobby. She was curled up in a ball on one of our lobby chairs with nausea and pain. Silver, a staff nurse on this day, heard about this sick patient and the delay we were experiencing to bed her. Silver took it upon herself to call this patient's doctor, get orders for pain meds and an IV. Then she went down to the lobby and found the patient. Silver then wheeled the patient down to our Discharge Lounge, started her IV and then treated her pain. Silver used her arsenal of PR skills for soothing the situation and in the end we had a very satisfied patient. After all of this, Silver and the patient had bonded. Silver took the patient as her own on 4N. At the end of the day, Silver had to relocate the patient to 4West when we finally got an open bed for her. The patient and the family were sad to say good-bye to Silver.
Silver Carlson is an outstanding RN in every way possible. We always know that 4N is going to have a good day when Silver is on. We so appreciate her team spirit and the extraordinary care she gives to our patients.
