Silvina's calm demeanor and sweet smile communicate more than any words could.
Silvina is always very positive and upbeat. She comes to work with a smile and is always ready to help with whatever assignment you give her. Silvina is a seasoned nurse and she has taken on the responsibility of being a relief charge nurse when our regular ICU charge nurses are off or on vacation. She is respected by her peers who trust her decisions and follow all directions that she gives them. Leaders recognize her as one who is quick in her assessment and decision-making, which increases the flow in and out of the unit for our critically ill patients. She physically moves and transports patients herself regardless of the assignment to ensure the safe placement of her patients. Silvina gladly takes on the Rapid Response Nurse role with confidence and expertise. She identifies patients who are high risk and starts early intervention to prevent them from deteriorating further. The floor nurses are confident in her skill and knowledge and are not afraid to enlist her expertise.
On one occasion, the Telemetry Charge Nurse was worried about a patient who had low blood pressure. Silvina came and calmly assessed the patient, called the doctor, and got orders to assist with the low blood pressure. The telemetry charge nurse was worried and wanted the patient to transfer to ICU right away. Silvina was able to talk calmly and reassure her that she was going to monitor the patient and that she was going to be present and watch the patient, while at the same time reassuring the patient that he was going to be all right. Her calm demeanor and sweet smile communicate more than any words could. She explained that if the patient improved the patient would not have to transfer to ICU. Silvina stayed with the patient and was able to stabilize the patient and the patient did not have to go to the ICU and in a few days discharged.
The nurses in Telemetry were grateful for her presence and her calming nature. She showed them what the true meaning of the Rapid Response nurse was supposed to be. The ability to avert a potentially disastrous event for the patient and return the patient to a stabilized state. Silvina is a joy to her colleagues and a blessing to her patients. She is truly representative of a DAISY Nurse.
