Silviu Stefanescu is the epitome of a dedicated, professional, and compassionate nurse. He recently had the opportunity to care for two different patients and their families as they encountered similar end of life situations.

Both patients presented with families who were at varying degrees of acceptance and grief. In both scenarios, Silviu always took the time to talk with the family, actively listening to their concerns. He answered their questions, and in his calm, professional, compassionate manner, explained the medical facts to the family, keeping them abreast of current assessment and status of the patient. Silviu did an excellent job acquiring the needed interdisciplinary resources to assist these two patients and their families with the death and dying process. He sought out assistance from our social work and case management teams to acquire necessary resources should the family choose to take their loved one home to complete their life journey.

He worked closely with our palliative care team so the families could determine reasonable goals and expectations for their loved one's medical care and treatment options. The Palliative Care team, when asked about Silviu, stated: "He has always been a wonderful resource for the Palliative Care Team as we work together to provide care/support to patients and their families. He is obviously passionate about providing the best possible nursing care for patients who are experiencing extremely complex/difficult situations. Silviu is very knowledgeable of his surroundings and always exhibits wonderful patience as he always takes the time to help me understand the "big picture medical story" when I ask for his assistance."

Coincidentally, with both patients, Silviu happened to be the RN who oversaw the removal of life support and he ensured both patients passed peacefully with their family by their side. He managed both situations with the skill and compassion that exemplifies a DAISY Extraordinary Nurse.
