| My father had been in the ER for several hours after having to return just a few days post op from another procedure. My father is an alcoholic, and his alcohol withdrawal escalated right at shift change, just as Simone had arrived. I made it known how overwhelmed and frustrated I had become, and I blamed Simone at every turn. After speaking with the charge nurse, Simone continued to care for my father with tremendous kindness. Simone was extraordinary because she was EXTRA ordinary. It is hard to deal with a patient in alcohol withdrawal. It is even more difficult to deal with an exasperated family, as well. I put her in a very awkward position with my complaints. Simone handled it with grace, mercy, and respect. I’m so very grateful to her. She never gave up on us on such a rough evening. Simone chose to continue to care for my father rather than ask for a different assignment. She chose to stay and show us the very best nursing has to offer. She was the perfect nurse for my father, and I am so grateful for her choice. She demonstrated tremendous maturity and the ability to look past the circumstances, focusing instead on the tasks at hand to ensure my father received the best care. She continued to care for him with grace, kindness, and genuine concern. |
