Being a good nurse is both an art and a science. Simi is a great nurse and a great CSN on 5B because she exercises her knowledge, skill, and judgment from a place of kindness and respect for others. She is always saying "patient care comes first" (even though no one is asking:)). Simi ensures each patient is stable and comfortable; then she looks beyond their immediate needs, coordinates with the interprofessional team and family members to assess and accommodate patient/families' developmental, social, emotional needs. She advocates for family-centered and patient-centered care, helping put into effect changes like cycling off TPN for long-term patients so they have more uninterrupted time with family or consolidating bloodwork access to minimize discomfort. She inspires me to think critically and compassionately as a floor nurse, and to look beyond my shift with my patient to anticipate other needs they might have. Simi communicates clearly and respectfully with everyone; I admire that, knowing it isn't always easy, especially in difficult or urgent situations. If the patient comes first to her, I feel that the nursing team is a close second. Despite her busy workload as charge, Simi is always willing to help nurses with hands-on tasks, or communicate with the team, or mediate with families during times of disagreements. She is always available to clarify questions or concerns we have. There have been times when Simi helped me transport a patient to imaging, or admit a patient to our unit, knowing otherwise I will not get a break for a meal; I wonder how many times she has had to skip her own? I believe she contributes to the safety, consistency, and quality of care that 5B provides to patients and families, and that's why she is a DAISY Nurse.
