A note of how a nurse went above and beyond to provide superior care for a patient. On Sunday evening, I received a call from Siobhan Lilley RN, regarding a patient and a VAC not functioning. She called the physician on call and they tried to solve the problem and then gave an order to clamp the tubing as the patient was going into surgery the next day. She remembered at some point someone had told her that these should not be disconnected for more than 2 hours or so and she decided to try and contact someone else. She asked the operator to page me and we had a discussion about this situation and I told her she was correct. She then was able to obtain a new tract pad from the OR and between the two of us, we were able to remove the old tract pad and place a new one with restoration of suction. This is an excellent example of superior nursing care which makes a difference in patient outcomes. I want to commend her on her thought processes and taking the initiative and the many extra steps necessary to achieve this optimal patient care. These items, which may seem small, all go together to help us achieve our culture. Thanks to her and your unit for all you do.
