It takes a special nurse to care for critically ill babies and support family members and each other in the daily operations of the unit. NICU nurses are described as attentive, supportive, compassionate, and going above and beyond during difficult times like grieving a loss. New mothers identify NICU nurses as great teachers and mentors. They are supporters of new mothers learning how to care for their fragile babies.

Some things our NICU mothers have said about our nurses are: “They never make me feel as if I was doing something wrong,” “They empowered me to care for my baby independently,” “They care for us so much even when they have a different assignment in another area and always offer words of encouragement,” “These nurses are our biggest cheerleaders during impossible times,” “The positivity from the nurses put me at ease, and I remember my fear about bathing my baby with all the wires and tubes disappeared because of their encouragement,” “NICU nurses go above and beyond to make our stay less stressful, and they provide excellent care,” “These nurses are a beacon of hope in what can sometimes be darker times,” “They are realistic but positive, and they can make any mother feel at ease,” and “I was amazed by the loving, compassionate care my baby received, but I was also overwhelmed by the care and compassion I received from these amazing NICU nurses.”
