Skarlleth had not only cared for her physical health but had rekindled her spirit.
In each clinical rotation, nursing students provide direct care to patients, including administering medications, taking vital signs, and assisting with daily activities like bathing and feeding. Among those students was Skarlleth, a compassionate and dedicated nursing student in her final semester. She was known for her warmth and genuine care, always going the extra mile for her patients.
One day, Skarlleth was assigned to care for an elderly female patient who was non-verbal and unhappy. However, the patient was not just physically frail; she was emotionally weary. The patient has an overwhelming sense of loneliness. Skarlleth noticed the patient's quiet demeanor and the way her eyes seemed to search for connection. Rather than rushing through her tasks, Skarlleth took the time to sit beside her bed and provide comfort by holding her hand. Skarlleth made the patient feel like she was being cared for. The patient smiled as a result of this kind of act, which reduced her worry. The patient held Skarlleth's hand the entire time, acting as though she did not want her to leave, even though it was time for us to leave the patient’s room.
As their bond deepened, the patient began to shine again. Skarlleth had not only cared for her physical health but had rekindled her spirit. The loneliness that once clouded the patient’s heart slowly faded, replaced by a renewed sense of purpose and joy. Skarlleth finished her clinical day and found the best reward of all—a reminder of the power of human connection.
