During my last stay, I had the privilege of working with several nurses, many of whom displayed most of the qualities you are looking for to be nominated for the DAISY Award. However, one amazing nurse stood out to me as going above and beyond the call of duty. It is an honor to recommend Slavka Morrison for this prestigious award. Slavka was there for me at one of the most life-changing moments of my life. I was so distraught after receiving devastating news from Dr C, and Slavka was there to comfort me. The kindness and compassion she showed me was over and above what I expected. I was alone in my hospital room, weeping, and the simple gesture of a “hug” was just what I needed. Slavka and I had spoken about my prior stay, my strong faith in God, and my love for my family, and she confirmed it was a miracle I survived twice. This news came out of nowhere, broke my spirit, and made me question my future. Slavka came in and treated me like I was part of her family—a sister of sorts—and gave me such wonderful care throughout the many days I was at St. Luke's. Slavka and I had also discussed my having a “metallic” taste in my mouth from sores and various medications I was on, and that I usually mixed diet iced tea in with my water to mask the taste. At this particular time, I was out of iced tea, and the kitchen was closed. Using her own money, she surprised me and bought a tea for me as a gift, as I didn’t have my wallet and did not use any electronic ways of paying on my phone. She also gave me a cool compress to calm the redness and swelling from crying and a warm blanket to feel the warmth as a huge “hug”. These small acts of kindness, as well as her sweet demeanor, love for God, compassion, knowledge, generosity, and experience, made me feel so special and so much better. Slavka also assured me that I was in great hands with Dr C and Dr S and explained exactly what condition I had and what things the doctors might try. I was also amazed by her knowledge of my particular condition, especially since only a small percentage of people have it. I am so grateful to her and hope you will consider awarding Slavka with this well-deserved Award for going above and beyond for me during this difficult time.
