SNP Montcalm ISD Nurse Team

I am nominating the school nurses working at Seiter Education Center: Sarah Reeber, Jessica Daller, and Josie Tinkham.
A few months ago at the Seiter Education Center, a 30-year-old female district staff member collapsed on the playground. The nurses responded and quickly determined that the person was pulseless. These nurses began BLS efforts. These lifesaving efforts were difficult due to the circumstances surrounding the collapse; the patient was on the ground under a swing set. These nurses continued coding this person for 20 minutes with only an AED and bag valve mask until first responders arrived. They continued to assist until ROSC (return of spontaneous circulation) was achieved and the patient could be transported.
Although the patient did not ultimately survive this event, the quick actions of these nurses, in quickly evaluating the situation and early intervention, allowed time for the family to have time to process and see the patient before she died. The family did opt to participate with Gift of Life. Again, these nurses' efforts allowed the opportunity for family and friends to attend the Honor Walk in the hospital, and their work will affect every person downstream who will benefit from organ donation.
School nurses do not expect to have cardiac arrest happen at their schools. That did not stop these nurses from quickly responding with limited resources and buying time for this family. This not only highlights the value of school nursing, but the resilience, critical thinking, and flexibility of these three nurses to snap into action and exercise skills that are not often called upon in the school setting.
