Women's services (OB) had a patient admitted via ER for pregnancy complications at 20 weeks. She was nearly homeless with poor hygiene and head lice. The infection control nurse was called for advice as the hair was very matted and could not use a nit-comb on it. When attempting to brush her hair out, large portions of her scalp sloughed off. It was decided if the nurses could not brush or comb the hair, it would have to be shaved off. Socorro (Coco) spent multiple hours at the bedside patiently combing and washing this patient's hair. She made sure the patient's dignity was maintained and even gave her a haircut that the patient liked. Coco did teaching on the importance of good hygiene, especially if she wanted to keep her baby. The patient tearfully related how thankful she was that Coco cared enough to make sure she was treated with respect. Coco was a bright light in the patient's life and she truly made an impact on this mom's future.
