My husband T was a patient at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center Rehabilitation Unit. Socorro was there at the beginning of this hospitalization and spent many days as his Nurse until he was discharged. Her kindness and compassion upon admission set the tone for his entire hospitalization. As T was coming in on a stretcher from the University of Chicago, T recalls Socorro saying, "Is that my patient, is that my Mr. T?" These words put my husband at ease, calmed his anxiety and helped him realize that he was in the best hands.
Compassionate and clinically astute, Socorro assisted with mobility and pain control, as well as continuously encouraging T to do his very best when in physical and occupational therapies. In my estimation, Socorro exemplifies the very core of humanness in caring and in particular the goodness and clinical courage that professional nursing brings to the complicated world of health care.
