Sofia was caring for one of our patients on the East wing. He was a young man, in his 20's, and extremely obese. Naturally, he was self-conscious about his appearance and it was difficult for him to bathe properly due to his size. In addition, he had open wounds on his legs that required treatment by the wound clinic staff.
One day, Sofia took the time to orchestrate a real shower for this patient. First, she coordinated with the wound clinic to have a chance to remove the old dressing, give the shower, and then have the clinic staff redress the wounds. Second, she enlisted the help of one of our male techs, Lance Holder, who came from the other unit, escorted the patient to a larger shower area, give the patient a thorough shower, and then bring him back to the East wing.
The patient could not stop smiling; and neither could Sofia. She really went the extra mile to give this patient his dignity back using teamwork and compassion.
