Sonia went above and beyond in assisting a patient whose insurance was repeatedly identified as out-of-network, placing an important interventional oncology procedure at risk.
Despite multiple confirmations, she took the initiative to contact the insurance program directly and confirmed that UNC Hospitals did have a contract.
When discrepancies persisted, Sonia continued to advocate, escalating the issue and respectfully requesting further review. Her persistence led to confirmation that the patient's coverage was valid and in-network on an individual basis.
Throughout the process, Sonia maintained calm, compassionate communication, easing the patient's anxiety and building trust. Because of her diligence, the procedure was not delayed, and unnecessary administrative barriers were avoided.
Sonia's actions reflect the very best of nursing: compassion, determination, and unwavering dedication to doing what is right for her patients.
