I recently delivered my second child and was lucky enough to have outstanding nursing care during my entire stay. One nurse stands out and I truly think she made all the difference in me having a positive delivery experience.
The day my son was born I was sent directly from an appointment to Labor and Delivery for increased blood pressure. During triage, things escalated quickly, and I was told we would be delivering my son in the next hour. I was alone, scared, and devastated.
This is when Sonya came in. She walked in to receive report and immediately stopped to come over, give me a hug, a box of tissues, and reassurance that everything was going to be ok. The whole atmosphere changed. The situation was the same, but she took the panic and fear away with her calm demeanor and reassurance.
My delivery went smoothly and later she joked with me that when she walked into that room, she knew I was up in a tree and not coming down. This was a perfect description of how I felt. However, what Sonya didn't say was while I was in that hypothetical tree, everyone was yelling and pulling at me to come down, but Sonya climbed up, gave me a hug, and held my hand as we climbed down together. I am forever grateful for everything Sonya did that day to make me feel like I was a part of my son's birth.
