It is a true pleasure to work with Sophia.
1st Nomination:

Sophia Mitchell has been the nurse educator for Brennan 3 for almost two years. Brennan 3 is a combined unit of two high-acuity service lines: medical intensive care and coronary care. The Brennan 3 staff have welcomed many new team members with diverse experience levels. Many nurses who transfer to critical care are still trying to master basic foundational nursing care while being exposed to and required to care for highly acute, complex, multi-system organ failure patients.

Sophia has the tremendous responsibility of identifying the learning styles of a diverse team of nurses. She is required to tailor their orientation experience to meet their specific needs and learning styles and to achieve competency. Sophia leads with her heart, speaking with team members with generosity, compassion, and empathy. She provides encouragement, constructive feedback, and celebrates the wins and successes of each individual. Sophia partners with leaders and staff nurses to pinpoint opportunities for improvement through meaningful, hands-on, one-on-one education.

She rounds with staff, demonstrates skills, asks questions from the bedside perspective, and helps facilitate and expedite education and re-education as needed. She is always working on something new and is creative in naming sessions, sparking interest, and engaging the team. Examples of some of her projects included a wound care re-education "wound n't you like to know"  she also supported our "sedation vacation" education, she did a rolling cart for peripheral IV care ("can you give ma a hand")) with an artificial arm with real-time demos, she provided a rolling Foley education, and a rolling hemodynamic refresher on setting up transducers and pressure lines.
Sophia goes above and beyond, keeping track of orientee progress, assisting with monitoring mandatory module compliance, and encouraging development and growth through national certification preparation and participation in the CAP program.

2nd Nomination:

It is a true pleasure to work with Sophia. She facilitates a spirit of inquiry by doing in-person rounding, sending online learning needs surveys, providing education materials for CCRN reviews, and sharing the latest advances in critical care with the team. Sophia connects with staff by identifying learning styles of a diverse team in age and experience, and personalizing to preferences as often as possible. This keeps the team engaged in a non-threatening, comfortable environment.

Sophia demonstrates development of collaborative inter-professional relationships by participating in multidisciplinary rounds with the nurse leaders, observing bedside shift reports, and being an active participant in the development of meeting agendas and daily huddles- she either observes or participates and presents information as needed. The staff truly enjoys Sophia's humor, communication style, and bottomless candy bowls that are always seasonally coordinated!
