Sophie stayed so strong while the patient was receiving the news and comforted her the best way she knew how, I was in awe the whole time at the compassion she had shown the patient during this time.
I have been blessed to be the social worker in the MICU for the last two years. I have seen so many challenging and hard things, and there are ones I just cannot get over. On Friday, I experienced one of the those cases and I happened to share that patient with Sophie. The patient very unexpectedly lost her baby in the NICU. I ran down to the MICU and I informed Sophie what was going on. Even though it was a complete shock, thankfully, Sophie stayed calm and was ready to do whatever needed to be done to help me and the patient. We were the two people with the patient while the NICU doctor was telling the patient she had lost her baby over the phone. We see and do a lot of hard things in the MICU, but again, this was one of the hardest. Sophie stayed so strong while the patient was receiving the news and comforted her the best way she knew how, I was in awe the whole time at the compassion she had shown the patient during this time. I do not know how she kept it together. As the patient and family were grieving, I had to do some things on the backend to make sure the family and patient had all the answers they needed, and the NICU physicians had the consents they needed from the patient and family. Sophie helped so much along the way, I felt like she turned into a social worker all while being the best nurse to this patient. I am very thankful it was Sophie that day. I love all of my MICU nurses and look up to them greatly, but Sophie was different and more than a nurse that day. I know if I was ever sick or in this situation, I would want Sophie there and to be my Nurse.
