All beds in our ED pod were full but Sothavy came back from triage to initiate the workup, obtain appropriate orders from me, and she even found a gurney for him to be rapidly evaluated.
I just wanted to honor Sothavy for an amazing save today. An elderly diabetic gentleman on antibiotics for a UTI developed new severe abdominal and back pain and came to triage. All beds in our ED pod were full but Sothavy came back from triage to initiate the workup, obtain appropriate orders from me, and she even found a gurney for him to be rapidly evaluated. The patient had a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm and survived emergent surgery with a 50% mortality quoted by the vascular surgeon - I attribute that to the rapid action and initiative she took to make it happen. He walked out of our hospital, a true medical miracle. Sothavy saved a life and deserves recognition for doing an extraordinary job despite a full pod and a bustling day of competing high acuity. I feel so fortunate to work with nurses like Sothavy who recognize critically ill patients and advocate so that they receive the care they need - in cases like this, care where minutes can mean the difference between life and death.
