I would like to nominate Souby George for the prestigious DAISY Award in recognition of her exceptional dedication and compassionate care in assisting a friend of mine who was a young, first-time mom during a challenging period of post-C-section complications and NICU care for her baby. Souby George, a remarkable nurse at our UTMB, has demonstrated unwavering commitment to the well-being and support of her patients, and this particular instance exemplifies her extraordinary qualities as a healthcare professional. One of my daughter’s friends just had a baby and she had posted something on Facebook about having trouble after her baby was born. I reached out to her to see if I could help and as soon as I saw her incision, I knew this needed immediate care, so I called my friend Souby who is an expert in this area. Souby immediately agreed to call her and talk to her, even though she was off duty, and this wasn’t even one of our patients. This young, first-time mom found herself in a distressing situation, following her C-section delivery, she experienced complications with her surgical site, and to make matters even more difficult, her newborn baby was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The situation left the new mom overwhelmed and anxious about her health and her baby's condition. Souby immediately recognized the urgency of the situation and went above and beyond to offer her support. She took the initiative to reach out to the young mom, providing her with her personal contact number, and ensuring she had someone to turn to during such a challenging time. With empathy and kindness, Souby listened attentively to the mother's concerns and fears. Understanding the potential emotional toll of becoming a new mom, Souby also took the time to talk to her about the "baby blues," offering reassurance and validating her feelings.Her caring approach and willingness to provide emotional support proved to be invaluable in alleviating the young mom's distress and instilling confidence. Souby's genuine concern for the patient's well-being was evident when she urged the young mom to seek immediate medical attention for her post-C-section complications. Her quick and decisive action may have prevented further complications and facilitated a quicker recovery for the patient.

She not only knows how to compassionately care for all her patients, but she ensures dignity and equality for them as well. She also takes time to pass this knowledge on to all the employees in the unit. She holds the journal club and provides excellent topics that are always engaging and thought-provoking for our staff to be more mindful of the care they give.
