She went above and beyond the charge nurse's responsibility to lead and guide her entirely floated team during an incredibly difficult shift.
To set the scene: It is the morning after a major snowstorm; there are no techs, no unit secretary, no breakfast trays, and a hallway full of hungry patients, and Lekha is our fearless charge nurse. This was my second pull since starting at Lank. I had 5 complete-care patients, and by 7:05 AM, I was feeling overwhelmed. Immediately, Lekha was such a support system, graciously helping me find supplies, answering call bells, and staying positive while I felt defeated. Around 3 pm, after a little too much time in an N95 Covid room, I started feeling lightheaded, dizzy, and tearful. Without hesitation, Lekha was by my side, pulling me in for a quick hug, trying to convince me to split her chocolate bar, and insisting I take some nice deep breaths in the breakroom. One of my worst career moments was equally one of Lekha's finest. She went above and beyond the charge nurse's responsibility to lead and guide her entirely floated team during an incredibly difficult shift, and I'll truly never forget her kindness. She had only known me for 8 hours, yet it felt like we were already close friends in this thing we were doing together. I am so grateful to her for being my silver lining during one of my most difficult days.
