In my mind, Staci is a hero.
For those of us who work in surgical services, it is not often we receive feedback from our patients because most are asleep or have received medication that gives them amnesia when we are taking care of them. So, my nomination is based on my observation of the excellent care given to the surgical patients in our unit.
Over the years I have observed Staci deliver excellent care on a regular basis to those needing an operation. I have on more than one occasion have my respect and admiration for her grow.
The other night at the change of shift when Staci should have been going home, we had a code blue occur in our department. Normally, if we need an extra nurse the call nurse is the person who should stay or come in to help.
Staci, who was not on call, did not give it a second thought, jumped in to help with this code blue. She did whatever was necessary to help our patient survive, and she was a huge help to the team and myself by providing skilled care to the patient and making note of it. When I told Staci we were good and she could home (around 1 am, 2hrs after her shift) she said that she would stay to make sure our patient was all right. She went the extra mile after an already busy shift.
On another occasion, we had a ruptured AAA at the change of shift from evenings to nights and once again Staci stayed without having to be asked to help with this highly stressful emergency. Those are two occasions that my coworker gave of herself to help preserve life for somebody's family member.
I know God uses other people to bless us and I know God used Staci in both scenarios mentioned to help me and those patients. In my mind, she is a hero.
