Stacy, the person who stayed with her and remained friendly and accommodating even when the patient was being abusive to her.
I would like to recognize Stacy Prater for her extraordinary nursing. She is a charge nurse in this department and has been with Mercy for over 20 years and she is often the voice of reason, paragon of professionalism, and the calm during the storm. Today, as the department was hopping as usual, we watched Stacy work with a special needs adult patient sent here for a non-emergent issue. While waiting roughly 3 hours for her caregiver to arrive so the patient could be discharged, Stacy was tasked with keeping the patient calm. She walked with her, played a card game with her, and made sure she had almost anything she wanted that we could provide. At a couple separate points, the patient became erratic and mildly violent and had to be escorted back to her room by security. All the while, Stacy stayed with her and made sure that a couple of the other nurses and unit secretary could handle anything that came in. There were moments when the patient lashed out at staff and security, and Stacy always managed to calm down the situation and sooth the patient. When it came time for the patient to finally leave, she was unhappy to be leaving Stacy, the person who stayed with her and remained friendly and accommodating even when the patient was being abusive to her. We say in this department that Stacy bleeds Mercy blue. More than that, she is a saint and an example of the nurse I would like to be someday.
