She taught all of us how to be THAT Clinical Nurse who could critically think, be one step ahead, and take the best care of our patients possible.
I am sure at some point in our nursing careers; we’ve all had that one Nurse who makes us think… “I want to be THAT kind of Nurse”. We are lucky because we work with that Nurse every day. As a new Nurse, you are full of uncertainty and questioning all decisions relating to your career. Then one morning, at change of shift, another Nurse picks up on your feelings. She takes you under her wing and helps you survive. When that was me, she was just what I needed—a mentor, an informal leader, a go to co-worker during my first years as aNnurse.
While I may not be that new Nurse anymore, Stacy continues to be a huge inspiration…she is STILL that Nurse that I want to be when I grow up and has been through all of her roles on the unit. I first knew her as a new Charge Nurse on the unit. She was a clinical nursing expert. She could get IV access on almost any patient. She knew the policies and procedures. She was confident when caring for her patients, providers respected her, other Nurses looked up to her, and she was an amazing advocate for, not just the patients on the unit, but also for her staff.
Stacy is always making sure we had what we needed to be our best for our kiddos. She was so welcoming to every person (family, staff, and patient) that set foot on the unit. She taught all of us how to be THAT Clinical Nurse who could critically think, be one step ahead, and take the best care of our patients possible.
When Stacy became a Manager, it changed the entire dynamic of the unit. Her open, honest, and trusting approach to leading us created an environment where everyone thrives. She has always been transparent in expectations, follows through on her commitments to staff, and allows us to be independent, confident and supported Nurses. She recognizes unit and individual successes, celebrating with us. She is not only invested in us professionally, but also personally invested in each of us—checks in with us (no matter the day or time). Stacy just knows when we need our work mom. We all deserve to have her in our Nursing lives. No matter the stage in our careers, we all need that person who unwaveringly has our backs, supports us through change, and truly cares about us. She is the leader we needed, the Nurse we aspire to be, and the work mom everyone wishes they had.
