We had a patient come back from surgery extremely combative and hostile towards staff. He was hard to manage, but Steffen Liebenow had extreme patience with him, frequently going in to talk the patient down and explaining to him and his family what was happening and advocating for the patient to get appropriate care. On his second day with the patient he noticed that the patient was having new tachycardia, but no other symptoms. Steffen knew that something wasn't right for a patient to develop sudden tachycardia, and continuously advocated to the doctor for further tests to figure out why the patient (who was still being hostile and combative) was having sudden tachycardia. He advocated for the patient to have doppler ultrasounds to check for DVTs and despite those coming back clear advocated for further testing, and eventually a CT of the chest revealed 3 PEs in the patient that continued to have no other symptoms than the tachycardia. Steffen's continuous advocating caught PEs before they became life threatening!
