Stella poured her entire heart into making this encounter as peaceful as possible for all involved.
Stella came into work in PACU for an extra 0700- 1500 shift. In the OR was a 2-month old Gift of Life patient who had succumbed to their accidental injuries. The patient had been in the PICU with their mother but once the child came to the OR, that bed was given away. When the procedure was finished, the OR RN wanted to bring the patient to an area where the mother could see them for a final time, so she came holding the child in her arms into the PACU.
Luckily, Stella was standing there and immediately sprang into action as she normally does. She took the baby and the OR RN into an open procedure room, got a rocking chair, and phoned the chaplain. Once the baby was cleaned and wrapped, Stella phoned for the mother to be with her child. Stella stayed with the OR RN who was having some difficulty with this delicate situation. Once the mother arrived, Stella assisted the mother in FaceTiming with family, getting a locket of hair, assisted the chaplain to the room per the mother's request, and provided a calm, comforting environment for their last embrace. Afterward, Stella facilitated the chaplain escorting the mother to security waiting downstairs who then drove the mother back to the Ronald McDonald house. She phoned for a care basket for the OR RN and assisted Decedent Care with the baby.
Stella poured her entire heart into making this encounter as peaceful as possible for all involved. It was a phenomenal example of how much Stella cares, not only for the patients and their families but also for her co-workers.
