Stella was given a patient assignment that included an older patient with cerebral palsy. This patient was contracted with minimal movement in the majority of their extremities and was bedbound. During report, Stella was told that this patient was 'needy'. Stella didn't let that phase her from providing excellent care. The patient was extremely thankful for Stella and her diligent, focused care. The patient expressed excitement that Stella would be taking care of her for the next two days. At the end of day two, Stella and this patient had developed a special relationship, in which Stella was very concerned for her well-being long term. It was obvious the impact this patient had on Stella, and Stella had an indelible impact on the patient. The patient even asked Stella to follow them to another state that they were moving to for Stella to care for them long term. It is easy for nurses to believe others' perceptions of patients blindly given to us during report; Stella didn't let this communication hinder her from providing patient-centered, diligent care that brought the largest smile to this patient's face. This human touch will truly carry Stella through the rest of her nursing career.
