Stella is a role model for other nurses. She leads by example when someone is in crisis or there is an emergency.

On a Friday, there was a patient being transported from the ED to the birth center. The patient was in active labor and was screaming in the hallway. Two staff members heard the screaming, so they went to see if they could help. The ER tech was waiting for the elevator. The patient stood up from her wheelchair and then gave birth in the hallway outside of 3N.

The RN in 3N was on the phone with the operator trying to get more help. Stella walked by, calmly took the phone, and told the operator we needed the OB STAT team to come to 3N. There had been confusion as to who to call to come for help and Stella took action. As soon as the operator heard OB STAT, there was an overhead page for the OB STAT Team to come help the patient.

Meanwhile, Stella grabbed gloves and jumped into action. She was calm and was able to pick the baby up and was tending to the mother. The other two staff members went to grab warm blankets and towels for the mother and baby.

Nurse Stella was so calm and collected during this event that it helped keep everyone else calm. With her quick actions, she was able to help the newborn and mom until the appropriate help arrived. She worked very well with the team who reported to the lobby. She never froze or hesitated and she was able to jump into action and help as needed.

It was a huge inspiration to see how she reacted and handled the situation outside the normal setting of PACU, but was able to help the patient in the lobby. She even went above and beyond to check on the newborn and mother after this incident to ensure they both were doing well.

We believe that she is the definition of a DAISY Honoree because of her demeanor and quick action to this emergency situation within the hospital.

Thank you, Stella, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
