The care provided to the patients and families while on the stepdown unit encompasses compassion and dignity with each interaction.
This team embodies what the vision of Jefferson is each and every shift. The care provided to the patients and families while on the stepdown unit encompasses compassion and dignity with each interaction. Throughout the last year or so specifically during the pandemic, the resilience this team has shown is nothing short of incredible. Watching staff care for our COVID patients particularly is enough to earn this nomination. The countless hours sitting at the patient’s bedside reminding them to just breathe and attempt to comfort them at the scariest and loneliest time of their life is indescribable. Providing companionship when their families couldn’t be at the bedside, encouraging Zoom calls, FaceTime calls, or even just quick phone conversations with loved ones when the patient was tired and giving up and families were eager to hear from them was also incredible to witness. I have witnessed and assisted staff to coordinate funerals, weddings, and last rights all being viewed over Zoom in order to allow the patient to avoid missing out on these major life events. This team has advocated for patients to have loved ones at the bedside in any way or duration of time possible when we anticipated it to be the last hours of their life. The staff has rallied around one another each and every day to provide support or reassurance that we did everything in our power to provide comfort and relief for these patients and their families. Being innovative in fighting to get processes and policies in place to ensure we were aware of a patient deteriorating as soon as possible which would allow for us to intervene faster in hopes of improving a poor outcome is something we continue to watch this team fight for. The connection and teamwork shown by picking up extra shifts and recognizing that these shifts will be difficult and emotionally draining but still doing so because of the respect for each other and the desire to provide quality care to the patients are genuine. The staff has also been each other support system when we have had to care for our own co-workers and family members and work through experiencing our own loss. The empathy and kindness this staff has shown by visiting patients and families when transferred off of our unit are also to be praised. So if not for all of the reasons already mentioned but overall for improving the lives of those we care for each and every shift this unit should be recognized as a true DAISY Team.
