Stephanie embraced this challenge with unwavering enthusiasm and energy, dedicating every available minute to coordinating care between the Infectious Disease/Travel Clinic, the Primary Care Provider (Dr. S), local pharmacies, and our own clinic.
Stephanie Shoning, RN, exemplifies the spirit of the DAISY Award through her extraordinary commitment to patient care, teamwork, and advocacy. Recently, she demonstrated exceptional dedication and compassion when a family of six reached out to our clinic with an urgent request: they were leaving the country in just two days and needed assistance to ensure they could travel safely. Ordinarily, preparing a family to travel internationally involves a complex process, including coordinating vaccinations, medications, and appointments across multiple specialties. Stephanie embraced this challenge with unwavering enthusiasm and energy, dedicating every available minute to coordinating care between the Infectious Disease/Travel Clinic, the Primary Care Provider (Dr. S), local pharmacies, and our own clinic. Despite facing significant resistance and tight time constraints, Stephanie remained steadfast in her commitment to the family’s well-being. Her efforts were further complicated by a language barrier, as the family did not speak English. Stephanie recognized the importance of advocating for this family’s needs, going the extra mile to ensure nothing was lost in translation. She adjusted her own schedule to come in early and collaborated closely with Dr. S, the local pharmacy, and the travel clinic, gathering essential details from the mother about their travel plans. Stephanie’s relentless dedication resulted in the successful completion of all necessary vaccinations, medications, and documentation—despite the incredible pressure and short notice. She even faced unkind responses from some contacts in the healthcare community, but refused to give up, always prioritizing the needs of the patients. Throughout this process, Stephanie demonstrated the ICARE values of Integrity, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence. She consistently placed the family’s needs first, demonstrating integrity by doing the right thing even when it was difficult, collaborating seamlessly across departments, holding herself accountable to the highest standards, treating every patient and colleague with respect, and achieving excellence in patient care. Her actions also align beautifully with Children’s Nebraska’s mission: “To improve the life of every child.” Stephanie’s efforts ensured that this family of six could travel safely and confidently, fully prepared for their journey. Her unwavering commitment to safe, high-quality, patient- and family-centered care is a shining example of how one nurse can make a profound difference in the lives of patients and families. Stephanie represents everything the DAISY Award stands for: excellence in nursing, empathy, and dedication to making a difference. Her hard work does not go unnoticed. She is an inspiration to her colleagues and a true asset to our team and our mission.
